The Crow, it is very rare for me to get outside with our Crow, but today it behaved itself!

Entrance is free at most national parks this week, so on Monday Stephski and I left work early to hike Muir Woods, and we were delighted to find that the Dispea trail was covered with Cyanide Millipedes (Harpaphe haydeniana). I’d only seen pictures before, but we probably saw about a hundred along the hike, leaving a drunken trail of impossibly tiny footprints in their wake. They have really beautiful but somehow subtle aposematism that signals their eponymous secretions of hydrogen cyanide. Yes, you read that right, these things secrete hydrogen cyanide, the active ingredient in the foremost chemical in the holocaust, Zyklon B.
